Permaculture Skills for Sustainable City Living

co-sponsored by the Red Clover Collective

plantingPermaculture is the conscious design of sustainable human habitats by following nature’s patterns. It offers practical ways to meet basic human needs for water, food, waste recycling, energy, shelter, and social connection without harming the environment. Learn about practical ways you can apply Permaculture in your own home!

January 17 1-4 pm What is an Urban Permaculture Garden?
Permaculture is a design philosophy that offers a systematic approach and practical techniques for growing food sustainably in the urban environment. The workshop will introduce garden design, soil care, crop selection, scheduling, and planting, with an emphasis on urban strategies such as using rooftops, containers, raised beds, and trellising. You will go home with a seed catalog and some containers to help you get started!

February 7, 1-4 pm Permaculture in Your Apartment
Permaculture can help you live sustainably even if you don’t have a yard! Learn about indoor techniques such as worm composting, sprouting, and recycling graywater. We will make a small, simple worm bin that will recycle organic wastes instead of sending them to the landfill!

March 14, 1-4 pm Caring for Soil
Permaculture can help you improve poor urban soils. Learn how to test your soil and enrich it by adding organic matter and other natural amendments, sheet mulching, and planting green manures. The workshop will also cover basic composting techniques and ways to deal with contaminated soil. We will make a raised bed and a simple planter for the Red Clover Collective’s garden.

April 25, 1-4 pm Rain Barrels
Permaculture offers many simple, effective, and environmentally sound strategies for managing water in the urban environment. One technique is to collect rooftop runoff in a rain barrel and use it to water your garden or lawn. Learn how to set up a rain barrel by helping to install the rainwater collection system at the Red Clover Collective. You may purchase a rain barrel to take home for $60. Please place your order in advance.

Tuition for Skills Workshops
Sliding scale $10-$30 per skill workshop.

Workshops will take place at the Red Clover Collective in Baltimore, MD. Please RSVP. Space is limited.
